AI and the Church: Opportunities and Challenges

Oct 23, 2026

AI is already affecting many aspects of our lives, from work and communication to learning. Many places are starting to integrate AI into their everyday operations, and the church will be no exception. What can AI do for the church, and how can we incorporate it into ministry?

Many things can excite us when it comes to using AI.

We can start translating messages into other languages, develop Bible studies, create social media content, and help the church reach beyond its four walls. Churches with smaller budgets can also benefit from AI, allowing them to complete tasks that might otherwise require several staff members. This can open up more time for pastors to care for their sheep.

There are also fun ways to incorporate AI and help us reach younger generations. We can use AI to develop Bible studies that are fun and interactive, make Bibles available at the click of a button, and create programs that allow people to search for information and ask questions. There are many ways we can use AI to better reach those around us.

However, there are some negatives that come with using AI as well.

AI can provide incorrect information, including inaccurate Bible verses or answers that seem correct but aren’t. Pastors can begin to rely on AI to write their messages without digging deeper into God’s Word or spending time in prayer. They may end up preaching messages filled with good sentences but lacking what God is trying to teach that particular congregation.

Another concern is privacy. Many things happen in our churches, including prayer requests, counseling sessions, and more. When we input that information into AI, are we putting others at risk? Churches should establish standards for using AI, including guidelines about what information can be entered into these programs.

We also run the risk of replacing what makes us human. AI can mimic caring for those around us, but it cannot replace a person. Visiting the sick or comforting a grieving family member requires a human connection. Technology can only take us so far when it comes to ministering to others.

We are called to love our neighbors and disciple those around us. We are called to help those in need and take the Gospel to those around us, no matter what advances are made in technology.

I don’t believe we should run from AI. We should educate ourselves about what it can do, just as we have done with every new technology that has come before us. AI can help the church, but it has some downsides as well. We need to continue using AI safely and responsibly.

We want to continue making room for our youth and helping them understand what we have to offer. They have so many questions, and we need to allow them to ask those questions. We also need to help them see that the church still has a purpose in this day and age. Technology can help us open those doors, but we want young people to know what it feels like to have a relationship with Christ.

We can continue to grow as a church and use AI to our advantage. We just need to make sure we are always following God’s Word and using common sense when incorporating AI into ministry.  Let AI help us reach people we might not otherwise be able to reach.

Never allow AI to overshadow what God is asking us to do. Technology can help us do ministry, but it should never replace the ministry itself.

We want to minister to the world God is preparing for us in the future.

In Christ,
James
